Antique Huipil for Woman from Yucatan (probably Merida), 1908

China poblana

Ethnic group: Mestiza Yucateca

Donated by Ángeles López-Portillo de Stiteler

Cotton huipil hand-embroidered in cotton threads around the neck and on the hem. There
are five snap sockets around the neck (two in front, two above the shoulders, one behind).
(The counterpart snap studs would have been sewn to the woman's necklace.) The huipil
had little wear and was restored in February 2017.

A man from a family in Pennsylvania USA bought the huipil during a business trip to Yucatan
in 1908.
